The Great Heddon Fishing Lures
Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009For generations, the Heddon Torpedo series of lures has been in anglers’ tackleboxes. They are considered to be one of the most widely used of all surface baits. With more than 13 million Torpedos being sold to date, The Heddon Torpedo lure is the highest selling propeller-equipped surface bait in the world.
They are known for their wild splashing topwater disturbance and for some anglers, the only topwater bass fishing lure they carry in their tackle box. According to some torpedo lure reviews I have read, some daring anglers have stated that when fishing the lily pads from shore, they sometimes hike to a close by pond with just a torpedo lure attached to their line. The tacklebox stays at the house!
There are 3 types of Torpedos, but the colour choices are vast. First, you have the Teeny Torpedo which is perfect for light-line anglers. With the Teeny, you can expect to catch all sorts of panfish including crappie, bass, and trout. Secondly, there is the Tiny Torpedo. Smallmouth bass and largemouth bass are the types of fish you will likely catch on the Tiny Torpedo. Lastly, you have the Baby Torpedo. The Baby Torpedo was created for the larger of the gamefish. When fishing the Baby, grab your net for the big musky, bluefish, redfish, northerns, stripers and more.
The Torpedo lures mimic wounded baitfish fluttering on the top of the water. Of course, the big predator fish see this as an easy meal ticket and surely don’t want it to go to waste. They greedily attack it, not giving the chance for any other fish to get “their” meal! These Torpedos can be cast quite the distance as well. They have an aerodynamic design allowing them to fly through the air and drop in the hot spots.
A bit about Heddon lures in general. Mr. James Heddon is the founder of the Heddon lure company and accredited with creating the first artificial fishing lure. The Heddon lure company opened up in Michigan, in the U.S., many years ago. Heddon lures are known to be sturdy and deadly in the waters. They attract the big fish and hook them with a grip not allowing them to let go. Heddon lure fisherman lose less fish when tying one of these on. Fishing enthusiasts who collect antique lures always have Heddon lures among their collection.
Heddon has produced many lures over the years and the quality remains the same. Aside from the Heddon Torpedo Lure Series, a larger series is the Heddon Spook Series of lures. You will find lots of Spook lures being sold, fished and collected today, tomorrow, and yesterday.
With the Heddon Spook Series of lures, you have the Heddon One Knocker Spook, the Heddon Rattlin’ Spook, the Heddon Super Magnum Spook, the Heddon Magnum Spook, the Heddon Super Spook, the Heddon SwayBack Spook, the Heddon Zara Spook, and the Heddon Wounded Zara Spook.
