Cincinnati’s Claim To Fame In Professional Sports
Wednesday, July 28th, 2010Cincinnati is definitely a city with a rich and interesting history. Many people are aware that the city was once known as Porkopolis due to the large amount of pork produced in the downtown area. However, what some people fail to realize is that there are many other interesting aspects of the city in the past and present as well. For example, Cincinnati Orthodontics and Cincinnati Braces are also renowned for their quality and good work. In addition to excellence in the field of dentistry, Cincinnati also has a rich tradition in professional sports. As of now there are two major pro sports teams in the downtown area, the Cincinnati Reds of Major League Baseball (MLB) and the Cincinnati Bengals of the National Football League (NFL). Also, in the now fairly far off past, the Queen City had a basketball team called the Cincinnati Royals, for which NBA hall of famer and University of Cincinnati graduate Oscar Robertson played. In the upcoming paragraphs all three of these interesting professional sports sides will be discussed along with a review of how the two currently existing teams have done in their recent seasons.
The Cincinnati Reds are one of the older teams in professional baseball and in fact used to be known as the Cincinnati Red Stockings and now, the team plays in the Central division of the National League. In their past the team has had both some brilliant success and some truly miserable failures. In fact, from the year 1970 to 1976 the team were anointed with the nickname of “The Big Red Machine”, which was a time of unprecedented success for the team that brought two World Series Championships. The most notorious player of all time was Pete Rose, who on talent and achievements alone deserves to be in the hall of fame. However, his partaking in and admitting to gambling on baseball matches while playing, has barred him from receiving that magnanimous honor.
The other major professional sports team in Cincinnati is the Cincinnati Bengals who compete in professional football. The team has in fact never won a Super Bowl and was closest when Boomer Esiason was with the team at Quarterback, losing in the Super Bowl to San Francisco. In the recent past the team has found some success under Coach Marvin Lewis, and they in fact have made the post season two times in the past five seasons.
Finally, the Cincinnati Royals used to be a professional basketball team in the city. A local standout from the University of Cincinnati named Oscar Robertson, who is now an NBA hall of famer, was the best player on the team and they met with a reasonable amount of success. The team in fact had been moved around all over the nation, originating in Rochester then stopping in Cincinnati and Kansas City before making their final stop in Sacramento where they are now known as the Kings.
Despite the fact that most of them are not incredibly successful these days, as anyone can tell from the preceding paragraphs, Cincinnati has a very diverse and rich history in professional sports.
